ABOUT PROJECT

This product concept was the outcome of a 6-week design project done at the end of the second academic year while pursuing undergraduate studies at NID.
The objective of this project is to gain a comprehensive grasp of the design process.
It explores elements that constitute the design process: research, ideation, execution, and testing.

ABOUT PRODUCT

Buddy is a protective cover for the intravenous cannula site of a child’s hand. This product is designed to make the experience less intimidating for the child, parents, and guardians. The protective cover is paired with a memory foam splint to make the recovery comfortable.

DISCOVERY PHASE

On a visit to the pediatric department of a government hospital, it was
observed that crude methods were used to secure the IV site:

  • Medical masking tape or cloth tape was used to secure the site in place and makeshift cardboard were used as splints to give support to the joint

  • The date of administration of IV was scribbled onto the masking tape holding IV cannula and splint together

The current lack of standardization isn’t only a hindrance to the operations of hospital staff but also contributing to discomfort experienced by the child.

Lack of Standardization

DEFINING THE PROBLEM

The Uncomfortable Patient

The size of the IV cannula and its placement
affect the child's comfort level

Children are active and restless, which can cause the cannula to shift, leading to irritation and pain

The material used to secure it causes itching, redness, and swelling on skin in some patients

The site is potentially predisposed to get inflamed or infected

Makeshift splints provide stability but cause strain on joints
